Documenting Memories of Singapore

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Given how quickly the physical landscape in Singapore changes, it's never too early for students to pick up a videocamera and start recording what they see around them. That was just one of the lessons students and teachers picked up at a documentary heritage video workshop and competition in June 2009. Hosted by Riverside Secondary School, the event was held as part of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme and attracted participants from various secondary schools.

Over almost a week, students were trained by Mr Nick Deocampo, a lecturer from the National University of Philippines, on how to present documentary heritage and history in an interesting way. Mr Deocampo's assistant, Mr Emmanuel Dadivas, also taught them techniques in computer imaging such as 2D and 3D animation. As Riverside Secondary School student Anthony Goh Kian Ping commented, "I had lots of fun and made new friends from other schools. Mr Deocampo and Mr Dadivas taught us many new things, such as how to write scripts and process our videos."

For their video projects, students could choose to document any place in Singapore that interested them. Check out the following video by Riverside Secondary School students, which focuses on Chinatown.
